BBQ's on Balconies - Summer Fire Prevention

Did you know that 70% of households in Canada own a grill? With summer in full swing, it means more people are barbecuing, but are you staying safe?

According to Statistics Canada, in 2021 fires incidents were on the rise with 45% of all reported incidents caused by outdoor fires and 42% caused by structural fires, of which, 7 in 10 were residential fires. The leading causes of residential fires are cooking equipment and smoker’s material and open flame which account for over 50% of all residential fires that occurred from 2015 to 2021.

Because cooking causes over 32% of incidents and 43% of injuries this highlights the hazards of cooking and the importance of barbecuing with care.
